During my communion time with the Holy Spirit, my attention was drawn to the powerful declaration found in Psalms 23, where David proclaims, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” The Holy Spirit emphasized that we as followers of Jesus often read this statement without fully embracing its literal and practical meaning in our daily life.

To truly acknowledge the Lord as Shepherd means recognizing that He assumes full responsibility for your life, that is your care, and the well-being of all those who belong to Him. The Shepherd is not merely a symbolic figure from scripture but the One who actively provides, protects, guides, and sustains His people.

The Holy Spirit reminded me that when the Lord is understood as Shepherd, it means that He is the Provider, the Protector, the Keeper, and the source of everything needed for life. He is the Person who concerns Himself with every aspect of His followers welfare and takes personal responsibility for ensuring that all their needs are met and their paths are directed properly.

This understanding aligns with the broader biblical truth that the Lord supplies everything that is necessary for life and godliness, a promise expressed in 2 Peter 1:3. The Shepherd’s care always includes our provision, our guidance, and necessary protection so that those under His leadership and care are not left to navigate life alone.

However, the Holy Spirit highlighted a common we as followers of Jesus make which is to gradually assume the role of caretaker of their own lives, by choosing to carry burdens that the Lord never intended them to carry. So instead of resting in the Shepherd’s leadership, they begin to worry, strive, and attempt to manage every outcome in their lives through their own efforts.

This unfortunate shift from trust to self-management always creates unnecessary distress and struggle in their lives. When we as followers of Jesus assume control in this way, they unintentionally remove themselves from the place of rest and guidance that the Shepherd Jesus provides and walk aimlessly in roaming land trying to make things work.

The Holy Spirit therefore is calling all followers of Jesus to re-examine their relationship with the Lord and recognize where they have taken back responsibilities that belong to Jesus on their shoulders to the point where they have been living as anxious managers of their own lives, to return those responsibilities back to Jesus who is the One who truly holds them and experience the rest He has secured for them.

Surrendering again to the Shepherd Jesus means acknowledging that as His follower you are not ultimately in charge of directing your own journey. Instead, the Holy Spirit is inviting you to follow the path that the Lord has prepared, by trusting Him completely to lead, to provide, and protect you along the way to your expected end of glory.

When you as a follower of Jesus release the burden of self-control by returning to the Shepherd’s care, you step out of all unnecessary struggle and anxiety and the life of faith becomes less about striving in your ability and more about your complete trusting in the guidance and provision of the Lord who lovingly leads His people in triumph.

In this way, as His follower you can rest firmly in the assurance that the Shepherd delights in caring for you as His flock and Him ensuring that everything necessary for your lives is supplied. By yielding to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, you will experience total freedom from burdens you were never meant to carry in the first place.

In the name of Jesus, may the revelation of the Lord Jesus as your Shepherd become deeply rooted in your heart today. So that every burden you have carried that does not belong to you is being lifted off your shoulders. The Holy Spirit is restoring your trust in the Lord’s care, provision, and protection concerning you, so that where worry and striving once ruled your thoughts, peace and confidence will now take their place. I declare that Jesus as your faithful Shepherd is now leading you, providing for you, and guarding every step of your journey.

I decree that you will no longer live as the anxious caretaker of your own life, but instead, you will walk in the complete rest of those who know that they are being faithfully guided and sustained by the Lord’s mighty Hand. I declare that as you surrender again to His leadership, the Lord will carry you through every situation you have faced triumphantly and bring you safely into the blessings He has prepared for you in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
