This message is a focused exhortation from the Holy Spirit calling for us as followers of Jesus to fix our gaze fully and continuously on the path Jesus has set before us. He emphasised that true spiritual progress requires intentional, disciplined, focused attention, and not merely a casual or presumptuous engagement with God’s Word.
The Holy Spirit defined “gazing” as more than just simply looking, by saying that it is a deliberate, sustained focus, to watch closely with the intent to observe every movement, discern every change, and gain deeper insight so that nothing of importance is missed. This is the level of attentiveness that is required to take action when He gives us words of instruction.
As followers of Jesus we are warned not to treat divine revelation lightly or assume we have full understanding upon first hearing what was said, but instead we are to remain watchful, responsive, and teachable throughout the conversation.
This posture is illustrated through Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane as He journeyed to the cross, as referenced in Hebrews (where we are told the reality of how He endured the suffering and shame of the cross by focusing on the joy set before Him).
Jesus maintained an unwavering gaze on the Father’s will, by refusing to be distracted by the pain, shame, or suffering surrounding Him. His focus was singular and immovable, and this is presented as the model for how we as His followers must walk daily to remain aligned with the Lord’s purpose for our lives.
The Holy Spirit stressed that life will always present us distractions by using appealing alternatives, opportunities, and “side shows” that seem very attractive or beneficial but ultimately divert us from the Lord’s ordained path for our lives.
These distractions, often orchestrated by the enemy through the bait of our desires, can lead to partial seeming victories, cycles of frustration, and ongoing struggles which are burdensome rather than the fullness of the Lord’s intended triumph we should experience in this situation.
Therefore, as followers of Jesus we are called to look straight ahead with fixed purpose, as we learn to navigate life without being swayed by these competing influences. The value of us fulfilling the Lord’s will for our lives far outweighs any temporary gain or relief which is offered by these distractions.
However this correct spiritual posture requires our conscious heart adjustment, by purposefully choosing alignment with the Lord’s will over anything that competes for our attention.
This word of instruction further emphasises the need for us to develop this focused gaze on the Lord more increasingly over time, so we grow into the place of steadfastness where we live fully immersed in the Lord’s will, totally free from spiritual instability, inconsistency, and walking in the repeated cycles of defeat and limited success.
The goal for us from the Lord is not obtaining partial breakthroughs, but achieving the full prize which is a life of sustained victory, wholeness, and complete fulfilment in our walk with Christ.
The ultimate prize of this spiritual posture is a call to take the “high road” where we keep our full gaze on the Lord and reject lesser paths even when they look very appealing from the natural standpoint, ignore the tempting distractions, and remain steadfast on the Lord’s path.
As we the followers of Jesus do this, all the competing voices and seemingly attractive alternatives will lose their power over our minds and fade away, while the path of Lord shines ever brighter by leading us to rich, lasting fulfilment and spiritual completeness.
Today in the name of Jesus, I declare that your gaze is firmly fixed on the path the Lord has set before you and every distraction loses its hold over you, as every competing voice is silenced. I decree that you will not be diverted any longer by lesser opportunities or be deceived by temporary gains, but you will walk steadily in the fullness of Lord’s will for your life.
I declare in the name of Jesus that your focused gaze on the Lord will produce clarity, and your obedience to what you observe from Him will produce completion, and your path will be marked by continuous triumph. I decree in the name of Jesus that you will no longer live in cycles of partial victory, but you will through the grace supplied by the Holy Spirit lay hold of the full prize, by walking in wholeness, stability, and rich fulfilment in Jesus Name. Amen.
