During my communion time with the Holy Spirit, a strong encouragement was given for us not to allow the negative words, opinions, judgments, or accusations of people including family members to determine our personal identity, destiny, or direction in life concerning the Lord’s plan for us. The Holy Spirit emphasised that we as followers of Jesus must throw off such words like worn-out rags and refuse to allow petty human thoughts and opinions to sit heavily upon us or define who we really are.
The central truth is that our identity is established by what the Lord who created us says, and not by what people say. The Holy Spirit reminded me of the Father’s declaration over Jesus at His baptism in Luke 3:22 which reads these words “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
Jesus derived His identity from the Father’s words, and we as His followers are called to do the same. The Lord’s intention is that His people live from the reality of His declaration over their lives rather than from human evaluations, criticism, or the approval of men. As Ephesians 2:10 teaches, we are the Lord’s workmanship, created according to His purpose and design for a life of good works prepared for us to walk in.
The Holy Spirit then highlighted the Lord’s covenant with Abraham. When Lord established His covenant, He made it clear that He Himself would defend His spoken purpose over Abraham’s life in Genesis 12:3 which reads these words “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
This revelation reveals that the Lord already knew there would be people who would oppose, criticise, or speak contrary to His plans and promises for Abraham’s life. Yet the Lord took personal responsibility for protecting and enforcing His word concerning Abraham. The lesson to be learned is that no human opinion can ultimately overturn what Lord has spoken over our lives.
The Holy Spirit further reminded me that no word spoken against us can prevail when it stands in opposition to the Lord’s ordained purpose. Isaiah.54:17. Therefore, as Jesus’s followers we must make it our habit to speak in agreement with the Lord’s declarations over us rather than repeat accusations, fears, limitations, or negative labels spoken by others. The power of words is significant, as emphasised in Proverbs 18:20–21
As followers of Jesus we are called to fill our mouths with what the Lord says and reject every voice that contradicts His will and purpose for our lives. The Holy Spirit also warned of how the enemy frequently seeks to influence people, especially through trusted individuals with the intent to divert us from the Lord’s path. A powerful example of this reality is found when Peter unknowingly became a mouthpiece for satan’s agenda by attempting to discourage Jesus from going to the cross. Matthew 16:23.
Jesus immediately recognised the true source behind the words and rebuked the enemy, refusing to allow a trusted companion’s opinion to move Him away from the Father’s will. At the same time, the Holy Spirit emphasised an important balance by citing that while we must resist satanic influence and reject words that oppose the Lord’s purposes, we must not become bitter toward the human vessels being used. Jesus Himself demonstrated this with Judas.
Though Judas betrayed Him because of his greed and yielded himself to satan’s purposes, Jesus remained dignified, loving, and just. He did not compromise truth or justice to protect Judas from the consequences of his choices, but neither did He respond with hatred or malice.
The Holy Spirit reminded me that Judas ultimately lost his position because he surrendered to greed, by allowing satan’s agenda of stealing, killing, and destroying to operate through him. This serves as a warning to discern the spiritual source behind words and actions of people while maintaining Christlike love toward those individuals.
The overarching message is that as Jesus’s followers we must anchor our identity, confidence, and future in the Lord’s voice alone concerning our identity. Negative words, criticism, accusations, and discouraging opinions must not be given any authority over our lives. Instead, we should continually focus on the Lord’s promises and declarations concerning our lives, knowing that He has spoken over us a future, a hope, and an expected end of glory.
As we embrace fully the Lord’s perspective rather than man’s opinions, we are positioning ourselves to walk confidently in the Lord’s purposes, protected from the enemy’s attempts to derail us through the negative words and opinions of others.
In the name of Jesus Christ, may every negative word, accusation, judgment, curse, and discouraging voice that has sought to define your identity lose its power over your life. May the Holy Spirit establish you firmly in the truth of what the Father has spoken concerning you.
May you hear the Lord’s voice more clearly and louder than the voices of men. May every lie of the enemy be exposed and rejected, and may every promise of the Lord become deeply rooted in your heart. I declare that just as the Lord defended Abraham and fulfilled His covenant purposes over him, may He defend His word concerning your life and bring every divine promise to completion and full maturity.
May you receive abundant grace to discern the enemy’s voice even when it comes through trusted sources, while maintaining the love, wisdom, and integrity of Christ toward others. May your speech align with heaven, as your identity remains secure in the Lord’s declaration, and may your steps be established in His perfect will.
May the future, hope, and expected end that the Lord has ordained for you unfold with increasing clarity and fruitfulness. May His favour surround you, as His truth sustains you, and His purpose prevails in every area of your life.
May you walk boldly as the Lord’s beloved child, secure in His approval and steadfast in His calling, as you go forward bringing glory to His name and advancing His Kingdom on the earth in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
